Early Kings of Gondor by neral85 Early Kings of Gondor by neral85
These are the kings of Gondor from the early Third Age.

ballpoint pen, coloured pencil

Just out of curiosity: Which one (I mean which picture, not which character) is your favourite? Or several of them? :-)

Pictures in this series:
Meneldil, the third king of Gondor
Cemendur, the fourth king of Gondor
Eärendil, the fifth king of Gondor
Anardil, the sixth king of Gondor (and his queen)
Ostoher, the seventh king of Gondor
Rómendacil I, the eighth king of Gondor
Turambar, the ninth king of Gondor
Atanatar I, the tenth king of Gondor (and his queen)
Siriondil, the eleventh king of Gondor

If you like my Tolkien-related art, look at my related journal or gallery folder.
But you can find even more of my pictures on my website It's in Czech, but you can still look over the gallery of illustrations. Enjoy! :-)

Is there a Byzantium influence to your Gondorian royalty and their clothing designs? I always picked up on that myself, at least, likening Arnor and Gondor to the split between the Eastern and Western Roman Empire. Just a thought that came to me today whilst milling around your gallery again :)

Byzantium influence? Definitely! I have a similar idea of Gondor and Arnor, so the inspiration and influence is quite intentional.
The one area where I have to admit the LotR films really influenced my is the architectural design, especially of Rivendell (and elven architecture in general) and Minas Tirith (and Gondorian architecture). The architecture of Before that, I didn't have clear conception of how Gondor would look like, perhaps something impressive-vaguely-medieval-lavishly-decorated. One of my earliest pictures may illustrate it:… :-) . Gondor in the film is clearly heavily influenced by Byzantine design, art and architecture, which I liked very much and adopted it for my own illustrations (for example here in the architectural design it is quite obvious).
And of course, it was only logical to use the same source of inspiration for this series of Gondorian royalty.

Fantastic pictures. I love Tolkien's Middle Earth and I've
Always had a fascination with anything to do with Arnor &
Gondor & her line of Kings.

Would you consider completing your collection of portraits
by drawing Elendil, Isildur & Anarion, and also the kings of
Gondor after Hyarmendacil I.

I'm sure there is enough information in the LOTR appendix section the Annuals of the Kings & rulers to do this. I'm very impressed with your portraits of the Kings of Gondor so far. Finishing off with King Elessar Telcontar of the reunited Kingdom. Nice work indeed!

Let me know if l can help with ideas for drawing the rest
Of the House of Anarion.

Thanks for your comment! :-) I'd like to draw the rest of the line, hopefully I'll find time to do it. But Atanatar Alcarin & sons should be quite fun to draw, so I should get into it at last. :-)
I didn't start with Elendil, Isildur and Anárion originally, because I wanted to practise first on the less important kings which came later.

Yes, I think there is a decent amount of information to hint something about all the kings of Gondor. But surely I'll appreciate some ideas for them.

Yes l'm looking forward to seeing your portraits
Of the rest of line of the Kings of Gondor.
I wonder if in due time you could even do the Arnorian Kings as well.

Awaiting your work in expectation.

with regards

Thank you for your comment, I'm really glad you like my pictures. I do have several of the following kings semi-finished, though currently I don't have much time for it. I hope I'll be to finish the Gondorian line though.
As for Arnor, it's more difficult, as we have much less information about its kings. But we'll see... Númenorian kings would be interesting, too... ;-) In any case, Gondor goes first. =D

I cannot decide between Earendil, Turambar, and Siriondil. I think it is great that you decided to put them all together!
