Meneldil, son of Anárion, was the third king of Gondor in the early Third Age, just after Isildur departed to his fate at the Gladden Fields. The name Meneldil means "Devoted to Heaven", one possible meaning of this word is also "astronomer".
Meneldil was the first King of Gondor to rule in his own name, although his uncle Isildur had intended to retain the power over Gondor as a High King (just as Elendil had been when Isildur and Anárion had ruled Gondor). However, when Isildur died, leaving only infant son Valandil, Meneldil used this opportunity to found his own royal house. Isildur's heirs had later neither power nor intention to quarrel with Gondor over these titles. Only Arvedui of the line of Isildur 19.5 centuries later unsuccesfully claimed the throne and finally Aragorn Elessar reunited both kingdoms after three thousand years.
Of Meneldil's reign as King of Gondor we know almost nothing. It seems that Gondor had peace during his reign and recovering from the War of the Last Alliance started.
Symbolism in this picture include of course the sky in the background for menel. Although there was a possibility to draw the night sky because of the "astronomer" meaning, I liked this version better. An then there is a standard of Gondor as a sign of his founding of the South Kingdom as a really independent state.
